I have just recently begun sharing these new tracks with people in hopes of getting some honest feedback & hopefully helping with the creative process...so, if you folks wouldn't mind taking a little time to check them out & maybe let me know what you think, I would be MOST appreciative...here's the link to my Myspace page...just let the page load up & the songs will start playing on their own:

I'm sure you're all saying to yourself, "Wow, self, a solicited plug! We've never been asked for one of those before so I don't know how we should respond... Any suggestions, Cid?"

Why, yes, and I'm glad you asked! As an example, I would offer something like this:

"Hi, I'm Cid of Jingly Bits and this St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17th, Jingly Bits will be giving our Farewell To California performance! Yes, at O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in downtown San Jose from 6 until at least 8 pm, we'll be giving it our all for the last time in California as we're "semi-retiring" and relocating back east. We hope to continue with our music there and maybe in a few years, you'll be able to catch us on the West Coast leg of our Unretirement Tour, but for now, this is it! We'd be delighted and honored if you could come on down, have an ale and a song or two and see us off!"

See? The plug's not that shameful when someone's asking for it... So...

What shows am I missing because of doing my own?

True, I do abuse the heck out of them because we do about twenty renfaires a year and play in all kinds of weather! I have two that need new heads now. One was played only twice before the head started ripping through the tacks.
So I am wondering...
which skin thickness should I try? (thin, medium, or thick)
should I try something other than goat skins?
do the replacement heads, with a silver band, work on a bodhran that had a tacked head before?
should I try a synthetic head?

I have three inexpensive, non tunable bodhrans...I can't afford a new one that might be tunable...also tunables are so heavy and my arm already gets sore, holding the light weight ones I have.

Hope some out there can share some advise on this topic!
thanks in advance

Triskela -- a vibrant neo-Celtic harp trio -- weaves a sophisticated tapestry of melodic intricacies with their original works and fresh interpetations of traditional Irish and Scottish folk music. From lively dance tunes, to hearfelt ballads and stirring airs. Triskela members
Diana Stork, Shawna Spiteri and Portia Diwa will take you on a musical trip through the pastoral British Isles and beyond. The stirring beauty of the harp is complimented by sweet, lyrical vocals, flute, whistle and traditional Irish drum along with guest musicians Peter Kasin on fiddle, Teed Rockwell on percussion, and dancer Eileen Danz for this special Pacifica Performances debut!

*******************************************

ABOUT THE TRIO:

Triskela has been performing together since 1997 playing an eclectic mix of traditional Celtic music, as well as Medieval, Renaissance, Latin and original works. Like the ancient, three-branched symbol the group is named after (the triskele), members Portia Diwa, Shawna Spiteri and Diana Stork find inspiration in performing together and presenting their unique arrangements of traditional and contemporary music to audiences at such venues as Grace Cathedral and Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, and the Festival of Harps in Rohnert Park.

I received a lyre for Yule this year & am having trouble with tuning it... The tuning pins are not marked as to note - hence, I am in a quandry over tuning. It's a 16-string lyre - and having had many upon many years of vocal instruction, I *thought* the 16-note chromatic scale for vocalists might work. It didn't. My husband found a harp tuning website, but as the tuning pins aren't color-coded on my lyre, the color coding on the website isn't very helpful. What I really need is someone with the knowledge of what the note scale on a lyre is - if I have the notes on paper [a diagram], I can figure it out from there I think. I've had no luck websearching/googling.
Help, please?

I've always been kind of curious about what makes certain genres of music sound like what they are, if that makes any sense. I'd like to take a hand at writing songs again -- it has been years and my early attempts have all sounded very plain vanilla folk.

I'm not particularly musically knowledgeable -- my theory is pretty limited to knowing about I, IV, V and the circle of fifths.

So, short of borrowing someone else's melody, what makes Celtic music sound like Celtic music?
Is it more to do with the lyrics?
Is it the modal nature of the traditional music (I think that's what you'd call it, right? -- Aolian, Dorian, etc?)
But if it is, what makes "American Irish" sound Irish? All the whisky?

Seriously, I'd be interested to hear opinions, ideas, suggestions, and if there's any links to info on the musical structure of the Celtic genre, I'd love to be pointed in the right direction.

Cheers!

Musicians Erik Ask-Upmark and Anna Rynefors are both "riksspelmaen" ("Official Master Musicians of the Realm") and combine ancient instruments to create new sophisticated sounds centered around the traditional Celtic Harp and the unique Swedish woodwind instrument, "Nyckelharpa". Swedish and medieval bagpipes provide the endless drone -- or dram -- from which the group gets its name.
Triskela Celtic Harp Trio -- Diana Stork, Portia Diwa & Shawna Spiteri (harp & vocals) -- play stunning original compositions, fresh arrangements of traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, plus music from around the world. They have been featured at the prestigious Festival of Harp Concert Series, the Bing Music Series at Stanford, SF City Hall and Yerba Buena Gardens. Their new CD -- "Voice of Tara" -- has been heard on the nationally syndicated radio show "Echoes".
Basically we are open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening up to new sounds.
We'll test market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. We are looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a growing and well-knit network of listeners and music lovers.
If ud like to promote ur music to the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details.
U can send me details, website etc on parvezagm23@yahoo.co.in or boundbysoundindia@yahoo.co.in

I'm from the Poxy Boggards, and we're currently looking for an opener for our show on St. Patrick's Day at the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana.

We're folk/modern with an emphasis towards drinking songs, and obviously due to the date a certain emphasis of the Irish contingent of our set. We're also using the show as our CD release event for our latest more-or-less completely Trad CD, "Whiskey Business".

Openers will be required to sell tickets. It's not true "pay to play", as there's no financial penalties or fees beyond the sales - the Galaxy usually expects openers to sell around 50 - 100.

If you're interested, please contact us at bogsheet@poxyboggards.com, and mention that you're interested in information about opening in the subject line.

Thank you!

I prefer seeing them at the Holloywood HOB as apposed to the Anehiem HOB because it seams to be a way better croud. Anehiem seems to attract all the overly agressive punk rockers who wanna figtht/ slam dance to silence, let alone any song. Maybe Anehiem just allows violence more than Hollywood. I'm to old for that shit. Just want to see the band.

Browne Jenkyn performs traditional music of the British Isles, as well as more recent and original pieces written in the traditional style. Their repertoire consists of songs of adventure, love and betrayal, death and the other world; along with a vast array of instrumental numbers including jigs, reels, waltzes and marches.
Their rustic, often dark sound is evocative of the woods and fields, festivals and beliefs found among the ancient peoples of the British Isles. BROWNE JENKYN weaves a colorful tapestry of folklore and music to stir the imagination.

I'd like to begin Celtic Folk Dancing. (in the SCA style/times) I always see a ton of European dancing and would just like to see some more Celtic. so here are a couple things I was wondering about....

1. What are the best Celtic Dances?
2. What music do you use for those dances?(Song title/ Artist?)
3. Is there Teachable steps/ instructions somewhere on the internet? if not, where? If so...where?
4. Is there a Tribe group that discusses this very topic? If so...may I have the direct link?

Thanks in advance for your patience and help.

According to one London journalist, "It's not only a must for every Loreena McKennitt fan but for anyone interested in the phenomenon of "Celebrity"”. The book is a behind-the-scenes look into the world of stardom and the consequences of fame.
